
Zach Slates was Assistant Director of the Fordham Intellectual Property Law Institute from 2010-2016. Before joining the Intellectual Property Institute, Zach was a Dean’s Fellow at the Fordham Corporate Law Center where his research focused on corporate governance and the regulation of financial markets. Zach was a Big Four accountant specializing in the insurance industry. Nicholas Bartelt
AlumniNick was the Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Fordham IP Institute where his work focused on researching IP law and policy, with an emphasis on copyright. In this role, he was primarily responsible for substantive legal projects including research and editorial work on amicus briefs, academic publications, and developing the IP Institute’s programming in other media. Before being appointed as Distinguished Senior Fellow, Nick previously served as the Assistant Director of the IP Institute where he was primarily responsible for organizing the Fordham IP Conference. Previously, as a teaching assistant, he developed curriculum for and taught EU IP and Advanced Copyright courses. As a student at Fordham Law School, Nick served as Symposium Editor for the Fordham International Law Journal and as an Associate Editor on the Fordham Moot Court Board. Nick holds a JD from Fordham University School of Law and a BA in English from Roosevelt University.

Dr. Sandra Sherman
AlumniSandra is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, and completed an LL.M in Intellectual Property Law and Information Technology at Fordham cum laude in December, 2008. She also holds a Ph.D. in English from Penn. Sandra was an attorney for several years in the U.S. Department of Energy, where she specialized in international and administrative law, and has held legal positions in the Justice Department and Department of State. Before joining the Institute, she was a professor at the University of Arkansas and Georgia State University, where she specialized in 18th century British literature and culture. She was President of the South Central Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies.

Magdalena Berger
AlumniAs Senior Fellow at the Fordham IP Institute, Magdalena followed current and identified emerging issues in IP worldwide. Her focus was on trademark law with the goal of developing conference topics, educational programs, and research projects. In addition, she coordinated research for a survey casebook on trademark law, edited academic articles and drafted teaching materials. Magdalena is admitted to the New York State Bar and holds an LL.M. in Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law summa cum laude from Fordham Law School. She was awarded the Emily C. and John E. Hansen Award for being ranked first in the program. Before coming to the United States, she worked as an IP litigator in Germany where she is still admitted to the Bar. Her practice focused on trademark and unfair competition litigation and trademark opposition proceedings. Magdalena studied law at the University of Passau.

AlumniAlex Bussey was a Research & Conference Fellow for the Fordham IP Institute. Alex graduated from Fordham Law School, Magna Cum Laude, in 2013. At Fordham, Alex was the Senior Articles Editor for the Intellectual Property, Media, & Entertainment Law Journal and an intern at the Samuelson-Glushko Intellectual Property & Information Law Clinic. AlumniDaan Erikson was a Research & Conference Fellow for the Fordham Intellectual Property Institute. Daan studied Entertainment Media and Identity at NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study. After earning his B.A. cum laude, Daan furthered his studies of media and intellectual property and received his J.D. from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. During law school, he served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Richard Fruin at Los Angeles Superior Court and interned with HBO’s Santa Monica office. Additionally, he spent his third year as a visiting student at Fordham Law School.

AlumniDinisha Fernando was a Research and Conference Fellow for the Fordham Intellectual Property Institute. Her research primarily focuses on developments in multilateral treaties involving intellectual property. She was also a member of the team organizing the 23rd Annual Intellectual Property Law & Policy Conference. Before joining the Institute, she was a White House Intern at the National Economic Council, where she worked on issues related to technology policy. She received her JD from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where she was a member of the Cardozo Public Law, Policy, and Ethics Journal. She graduated cum laude from the University of Rochester with Bachelors of Arts in Psychology and Political Science.

AlumniAlysse Janet was a Research and Conference Fellow for the Fordham Intellectual Property institute. She is a Fordham Law School graduate (2014, LL.M. in Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law, Magna Cum Laude) and has received the Emily C. and John E. Hansen Award for being ranked top of her program. Additionally, she holds a French Master in intellectual Property Law, studying law in France for five years. Alysse had the opportunity to live, study and work in Nice, France, Paris, France and Boulder, Colorado before coming to New York. Her work with the Institute included researching topics, notably in trademark law, and organizing the 23rd Annual Intellectual Property Law; Policy Conference. Additionally, Alysse assisted Professor Hansen in his Trademark Law and EU IP Law classes.

Jason Lunardi
AlumniJason Lunardi was an Editorial & Conference Fellow at the Fordham Intellectual Property Law Institute. At the Institute, Jason worked on editing and preparing books and articles for publication including acting as Lead Editor for the forthcoming 2010 and 2011 editions of Fordham International Intellectual Property Law & Policy (Hart Publishing).
Jason is a 2009 graduate of Fordham Law School where he served as the Managing Editor of the Fordham Intellectual Property, Media & Entertainment Law Journal. He was awarded the First Prize in the 2009 Nathan Burkan Memorial Writing Competition at Fordham for his paper “Comparing EU and U.S. Approaches to Internet Piracy & “‘Graduated Response’”, and was the first runner up in the 2009 Grammy Foundation Entertainment Law Initiative for his essay “Navigating the Clouds: Exploring Revenue Sources for Creators in a Networked World” (20 No. 2 NYSBA Ent., Arts & Sports L.J. 87 (Summer 2009)). He also published a student note entitled “Guerrilla Video: Potential Copyright Liability for Websites That Index Links to Infringing Content,” (19 Fordham Intell. Prop. Media & Ent. L.J. 1077 (2009)).
Jason holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Business from the Berklee College of Music, and has worked at several music industry companies including legal internships at ASCAP and music publisher & royalty auditing firm H/B Webman.

Sven Schonhofen
AlumniSven is a Fellow for the Fordham Intellectual Property Institute where his work focuses on trademark and copyright law. He is an associate in the Munich office of the international law firm Reed Smith and a member of the Intellectual Property, Information and Innovation Group. Before joining Reed Smith, he worked for a British law firm based in Munich.
Sven studied law and business at Bayreuth University in Germany and obtained an LL.M. in Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law from Fordham Law School (with Honors). He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. degree and writing a thesis on publicity rights in Germany and the U.S. Sven publishes regularly on current issues in IP and IT law.

AlumniOlisa was a Research Assistant at the Fordham IP Institute. He is an Aberystwyth University law graduate. He was admitted into the Nigerian Bar in July 2016 and received an L.M.M. in Intellectual Property and Information Technology law at Fordham University School of Law. He has a passion for Entertainment industry and Intellectual Property Law and has gained previous experience as a member of the external relations team in the Lagos Court of Arbitration and has practiced as an entertainment Lawyer in Nigeria serving as a legal advisor to Kakadu the Musical, Nigeria’s award-winning musical. As well as acting as a research assistant to the institute he is also an LL.M. staff member of the Fordham Intellectual Property Law Journal.

Philipp Lengeling
AlumniPhilipp Lengeling was a Research Assistant at the Fordham IP Institute. He is a graduate of the University of Cologne, Germany, where he obtained his Magister iuris degree and passed the First State Exam (“Erste Staatsprüfung”). He also received an L.L.M. degree from Fordham Law School in Intellectual Property and Information Technology Law in 2018. Besides his studies and being involved with the Fordham IP Institute, Philipp works remotely for the law firm RafterMarsh (based in California and the U.K.), providing legal and business development services to small and medium-sized companies from the audio, music technology, and digital media industry. Out of the office, Philipp immerses himself in music by playing the keyboard, the guitar and as a music producer in numerous music projects.

She has a passion for trademark and copyright, as well as an interest in the entertainment industry. She passed the Chinese National Bar in 2016, and received an LL.B degree in International Financial Law from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics in 2017. In 2018, she also received an LL.M degree in Intellectual Property and Information Technology from Fordham University School of Law. Brianna’s research has focused primarily on the exhaustion doctrine and parallel imports applied to patents under international agreements. Prior to attending Fordham Law, Brianna received her B.A. in International Politics and Spanish from James Madison University. Post-law school, Brianna will pursue a career specializing in international IP law in business transactions. Brianna also serves as an Editor for the Fordham Journal of Corporate and Financial Law. Rilana previously obtained a degree in Information Law from the University of Applied Science Darmstadt in Germany and holds a Doctor juris from the University of Cologne. Before coming to the United States she worked as in-house counsel in a TV production company in Cologne and as a transaction lawyer at DLA Piper UK LLP in Munich.

She received her undergraduate law degree with a specialization in IP from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (India). She has also completed her engineering in the field of Biotechnology. She has previously worked with consulting firms such as KPMG, Gartner, and is also a registered Indian Patent Agent. Additionally, she is the LL.M. representative for the intellectual property law society.
